Study Permit

The study permit is a document we issue that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLI) in Canada. Most foreign nationals need a study permit to study in Canada. 

Eligibility requirements

You can study in Canada if you:

  • are enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI)
  • prove you have enough money to pay for your:
    • tuition fees
    • living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada and
    • return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada
  • obey the law, have no criminal record and get a police certificate ( over 18 years old required )
  • are in good health and get a medical exam (if required)
  • prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires

 

Student Direct Stream

Normal process time is within 20 calendar days.

Suitable for legal resident living in China, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Vietnam

Requirement:

  • have an acceptance letter from a post-secondary DLI
  • prove that you’ve paid the tuition fees for your first year of study
  • live outside of Canada when you apply
  • have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAN$10,000
  • have a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) from the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Diversité et de l’Inclusion
    • This is only if you’re planning to study in Quebec
  • get a medical exam before you apply (if you need one)
  • get a police certificate before you apply (if you need one)
  • have your most recent secondary or post-secondary school transcript(s)
  • have a language test result that shows:
    • a score of 6.0 or higher in each skill (reading, writing, speaking and listening) on the International English Language Testing System(IELTS) or
    • a Test d’évaluation de français (TEF) score that is equal to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of at least 7 in each skill (reading, writing, speaking and listening)

 

Renew/Extend Study Permit

The expiry date on your study permit tells you when you have to stop studying and leave Canada.  This date is usually the length of your study program, plus 90 days.

If you want to keep studying, you need to extend your study permit. You should apply to extend your permit at least 30 days before it expires
